Applied

A medical anthropologist at workApplied anthropologists use anthropology to solve real-life problems.

Applied anthropologists work in industry, health care, design, education, government, foreign aid, parks and resource management, museums, and many other places.

However, in some senses, all anthropology is really applied. Anthropology teaches us to think holistically, to approach problems from many different viewpoints. Anthropology encourages us to appreciate the logic, and sometimes the beauty of other ways of being and other ways of understanding. This ability is critical no matter what you do.

One of the questions everyone who majors in anthropology gets hit with sooner or later is "Anthropology, Oh, that's nice but what are you ever going to do with it" It's a fair question because very few anthropology majors actually go on to become anthropologists themselves, and there aren't many jobs posted as just "anthropologist wanted." However the skills, ways of thinking, analyzing, and organizing that you learn in anthropology as well as the wealth of information about other cultures and other times give you the skills to succeed in an unusually wide number of professions. Here's a list of people you might have heard of with undergraduate or grad degrees in anthropology: Rick Bayless (chef and TV host), Saul Bellow (novelist), Tracy Chapman (singer songwriter), Glenn Close (actor), Johnnetta B. Cole (college president), Jeff Corwin (biologist TV host), Michael Crichton (novelist), Matt Elam (football player), Greg Graffin (musician), Ted Hughes (poet, husband of Sylvia Plath), Ashley Judd (actor), Jomo Kenyatta (freedom fighter and first president of Kenya), Jim Yong Kim (World Bank president), Christopher Langton (computer scientist), Hugh Laurie (actor), Ursula K. LeGuin (novelist and daughter of famous anthropologist A.L. Kroeber), Yo Yo Ma (cellist), Gary Snyder (poet), Kurt Vonnegut (novelist), and many others...

And, for extra fun, here's a few people who's parents included at least one anthropologist: Wes Anderson (director), Barack Obama (US President), Stewart Copeland (drummer), Mike Judge (writer/producer), and Ted Danson (actor),

Oh yeah, and King Charles III is the first British monarch to have a university education. He studied anthropology and archaeology before switching to history. So, if you're planning on inheriting a noble title, you're in the right place. Even if being crowned isn't in your future, anthropology and history make a great double major.
