The Portuguese Arrive in Asia

Throughout the 15th Century, the Portuguese experimented both with ship design and navigational technique. Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) showed that many commonly held European beliefs about sea travel were wrong (for instance, water didn't boil at the equator). By the 1488, Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope and sailed into the Indian Ocean.
