Muslim and Portuguese

 When the Portuguese arrived in the Indian Ocean, Muslim traders controlled the ocean and overland trade since the 800s and much of the population was Muslim.

By mid 1500s, Portuguese had seized significant possessions and displaced much of the earlier traders.

Development of new ship technology was critical.  The Galleon changed the nature of sea war.
