Focal Vocabularies

Languages tend to build up words around ideas, material goods, or environmental conditions that interest them (sometimes).

Compare widely known English words for money with widely known English words for bicycle.

(BTW: the claim that Eskimo have a large number of words for snow dates to Boas but is highly controversial. It depends on how "word" is defined...of course skiers have a large number of words for snow too...)
