19th Century Evolutionism

Anthropologists in the 19th century were wanted to show how human culture had evolved.

Sir Edward Burnett Tylor (1832-1917), is often considered the founder of anthropology.

Tylor traveled as a young man but his anthropology was based primarily on reading the accounts of others. Because of this, Tylor, and others of his generation, are often called "armchair anthropologists."
