Franz Boas (1858-1942)

Franz Boas, Middle agedBoas is considered the father of American Anthropology.

He did fieldwork on Baffin Island, then, later on Vancouver Island.

He taught at Columbia in NYC where he
trained an entire generation of the most famous American anthropologists.

Boas produced an enormous body and variety of scholarship but his work was guided by three principles:

Bio-psychological Equality,
Cultural Relativism,
Fieldwork.
