Frequently, rites of passage involve removing body parts culturally understood as belonging to the opposite sex (usually foreskin or clitoris and blood), and sometimes adding elements of the appropriate sex.

Among the Sambia of New Guinea (and numerous other groups), this involves both blood and semen.
