Exchange Logic

There are many reasons for exchange:

Exchange stabilizes marriages since usually goods must be returned on divorce.

Bridewealth compensates for loss of female labor.

Dowry (sometimes) stabilizes families where land is scarce.

Both bridewealth and dowry increase family control over marriage since these must usually come from family members.
