Polyandry

Polyandry in Tibet, woman with two husbands and two children

Polyandry is relatively rare but does occur in societies throughout the world (particularly in Tibet).

Much (but not all) polyandry is fraternal (brothers share a wife).

Polyandry is often linked to particular social and ecological conditions: a) it is very difficult to support children, b) it is extremely important to keep family land together.
