Swidden (slash and burn)

Much of tribal gardening is swidden (another name for slash and burn)

Swidden sometimes looks destructive but, within limits, is ecologically sound.

Swidden can become destructive if there are insufficient fallow periods. This can occur due to either population increase or land loss.
