Where contact was intense, colonial governments used education, taxation, regulation, and policing to create good colonial citizens.
These practices altered culture in fundamental ways.
Other groups fled to marginal areas, attempting to continue their lives. However, this too altered their lives. Today, some groups avoid all but very occasional contact with the outside...but only by fleeing.
