Once they had made contact or taken over a region, it had to be made profitable (voyages cost money...backers expected return).

The first step was usually pillage. This was carried out brutally and famously in the Spanish raid on Aztec and Incan gold...but Europeans also pillaged where they could thoughout the Indian Ocean.
