There is no agreed upon way to measure social good and there is little common sense connection between salary, prestige, and social good.

Trash collectors create more social good than brain surgeons but this is very unlikely to be reflected in their wages or prestige.

Jobs are paid according to numerous factors including supply and demand, how hard the qualifications are to acquire, and, maybe most importantly, how much additional profit the employer can make by hiring the person.

But, we should mention that even though we are much more likely to need trash collectors than brain surgeons, we're glad the latter exist...
