The
slave system developed two triangles (or circles) of trade. Both had
Africa and the Caribbean as their base, but their apex was in either Northern
Europe or New England.
The trade in slaves was dangerous and brutal, but enormously
profitable. On a successful voyage owners could hope to make profits of up
to 900% return on investment.
Money made on the slave-sugar-Africa route (along with money
from other sources) fueled education, science, and industry in Europe and the
Northeast United States.
