Africa and Europe

European contact with Africa began to be substantial in the mid 15th century.

Early trade was dominated by Portuguese. Products were primarily gold, ivory, spices, wax, rubber, etc.

Some slaves were traded but numbers were very small. 1) almost all pre-modern civilizations had slaves and traded them. 2) slavery had nothing at all to do with race. 3) Europe did not need slaves.
