Second Opium War

Peasant soldiers of the 2nd Opium war, armed with wicker shields and wooden clubs.

Also called the "Arrow War" began in 1856 when the Chinese once again attempted to halt the sale of opium.

The French joined the British, partly to avenge the death of a missionary.

The war ended in 1860 with the Treaty of Tianjin.

The Treaty legalized opium and gave European (and US) rights to open embassies in Beijing.  In addition, Christian mission work was legalized.
