Plassey and John Co. Rule
British
and Mughal worked together to control countryside and increase trading
profits. However, power balance shifted steadily toward the British.
British control formally begins 1757 with Robert Clive's
victory at the Battle of Plassey.
There, 3,000 John Co. troops faced 50,000 troops of Siraj
ud Doula, Nawab of Bengal. But bribery played a key role in the
battle: Clive was working to install Mir Jafar, a rival for the Bengal
throne.
