The VOC was one of the world's first Joint Stock Companies...the first to raise capital by selling shares.

This gave it numerous advantages: It could raise very large amounts of money, it was not overly beholden to any political or religious mission, it could focus its energies entirely on making money, and it returned its benefits to fairly large numbers of people
