The Great Mutiny/
First Indian War of Independence
May 1857- July 1858
While
the revolt started with rumors of the violation of religious taboos, the
ultimate cause was the nature of John Co. policies.
Revolt shows fractured nature of India under the Co.
Great savagery on both sides but ultimately little threat to British
control.
Results in end of John Co. and beginning of direct
colonial rule.
