Clashes

Trade disputes: to what degree can nations protect their industry, their currency, etc? How do you tell in which country a product is made? To be made in America, how much of it needs to originate here? What processes need to be performed here.

Sweatshop Labor: If people freely choose to work in what we consider terrible conditions, is that a problem? How much authority can the international community assert over working conditions and how do they assert such authority?

Human rights/cultural rights: who determines what a human right is? What about female genital operations? hadd punishments? capital punishment?

Environmental issues: rich nations often got rich by exploiting the environment with almost no limitation. Should today's poor nations have that option? What about whaling, dolphin fisheries, etc, etc. Is it OK to hunt the elephants if they are trampling your crops?

Various forms of "culture defense:" Are different cultures cause for different laws/policies? Is a murder excusible if, historically, your culture said it was OK to commit that particular kind of killing? Is there a cultural fit between particular societies and democracy or dictatorship?

Loss of diversity of species, crops, cultures, languages: In case after case economic prosperity (or in some cases survival) demands reduction of diversity. We agree that linguistic diversity (for example) is a good thing, but will you make sure to educate your child in Pilpil when you know that the only route to economic success is mastery of Spanish? Will your child want to speak Pilpil when everyone around him or her speaks Spanish?
