Between the end of the crusades and the end of the 15th century, Europe begins to pull even with the more developed regions of the world.

They are able to hold back the Turks in Eastern Europe and they are ultimately able to seize Spain from the Moslem powers.

The Italian states have benefited enormously from Mediterranean trade but most of Europe remains desperately impoverished.
